SUGGEST AN ALTERNATIVE = đề nghị một cách khác.
ALTERNATIVE = một lựa chọn khác.
I’M SORRY BUT I’M NOT FREE AFTER THREE = tôi rất tiếc, sau ba giờ tôi bận.
REASON = lý do.
AN APOLOGY = lời xin lỗi.
PROPOSE AN ALTERNATIVE = đề nghị (ngày giờ hẹn) khác.
VAGUE = mơ hồ, tổng quát, không rõ.

CUT 2

CULTURE TIPS: Rejecting a Suggestion; Suggesting alternatives.

Larry: Culture tips.
Eliz: Hello again, We’re here with Gary Engleton, our business language expert. Let’s look at our e mail questions, Gary.
Gary: All right.
Eliz: We have an interesting question today about arranging meetings. The question is,”If someone suggests a meeting time that is not good for me, what should I do?”
Gary: That’s a very good question. Rejecting a time can be a little difficult.
Eliz: What should you do?
Gary: Well, first, if you are going to reject a time, you should give a reason.
Eliz: I see.
Gary: For example, you could say, “I’m sorry, but I can’t meet you on Monday because I’ll be in New York.”
Eliz: Is it OK to be vague, to say,” I’m sorry but I’m busy at that time?”
Gary: Good question. Yes. It’s OK to be vague,, but be sure to include an apology, “I’m sorry but…”
For example, you can say,”I’m sorry but I’m not free until after three.” The second thing that you have to do is to propose an alternative. [đề nghị ngày giờ hẹn khác] Eliz: You mean to suggest another time?
Gary: Exactly. For example, after rejecting Monday, you could say.”But I’m free all day on Tuesday.”
Or you could say,”Would it be possible for us to meet on Tuesday?” If you continue like that, you will soon find a time that is good for you both.
Eliz: Thanks, Gary! I’m sure that our listeners will be much better at making apointments!
Gary: My pleasure!

Why can’t the person meet at the suggested time?
Man: Can we meet at three o’clock on Thursday.

Eliz: She has meetings in the afternoon.
Man: Can we meet at noon on Tuesday?
Woman: Tuesday isn’t good for me. I’ll be out of town. (ding) (pause for answer)
Eliz: She’ll be out of town.
Man: Can we meet at ten a.m. on Wednesday?
Woman: I have a doctor’s appointment Wednesday morning. Can we meet in the afternoon? (ding) (pause for answer)
Eliz: She has a doctor’s appointment.

Đó là những nhóm chữ như: …is not good for me, I’m sorry but…

Mấy chữ mới:

A NEGOTIATION = thương lượng. TO NEGOTIATE.
TO APOLOGIZE = xin lỗi. AN APOLOGY = lời xin lỗi. I apologize, please accept my apologies, I’m sorry = tôi xin lỗi, tôi ân hận.
I’M SORRY, BUT I’M MEETING AT THREE WITH MR.

COULD WE MAKE IT…Chúng ta có thể gặp lúc…
Hay là: WHY DON’T WE TRY AT…chúng ta có thể họp lúc…
AVAILABLE = rảnh, FREE.

CUT 5

Eliz: Now it’s time for Gary’s tips with Gary Engleton.
Gary: Hello, Elizabeth.
Today we’ll look closely at the language of the Business Dialog. We’ll see how Mary and Sarah negotiate a meeting time.
Mary is trying to schedule a production meeting. She checks to see if Sarah is free tomorrow, but Sarah is busy. Let’s listen.

Mary: Hello, Sarah.
Sarah: Yes?
Mary: This is Mary. Are you free at three tomorrow for a production meeting?
Sarah: No, sorry. I’m meeting at three with Mr. Thompson.
Gary: Sarah apologizes and explains why she can’t meet at three o’clock. She then suggests another meeting time. Let’s listen.
Sarah: Could we make it earlier in the day? How about 10:00, 10:30?
Gary: “Could we make it…” is a useful way to suggest a new meeting time. Unfortunately Mary is not available at this time. So she suggests another time, using the expression “Why don’t we..”.
Mary: I’m busy until 11:00. Why don’t we try for 11:30?
Sarah: That’s good for me.
Gary: The new time is good for both Sarah and Mary. Finding a good time is a kind of negotiation. You have to find a time that’s good for both of you. Thanks for joining us today for Gary’s Tips. We’ll see again next time.

MUSIC

Eliz: Well, our time is up. Tune in next time for Functioning in Business. See you then!

My name is… No, they didn’t. My grandfather named me.

My name means “autumn/fall” in English.

I like my name most. It is meaningful to me because it was given to me by my grandfather, whom I love very much.

2. How are you? Did you have a nice day?

I’m fine. How are you?

Yes, I do. I have a nice day. I went to see a great movie with my friends. We are going out for dinner at our favorite restaurant now.

3. What day is it today? What is your busiest day of the week? Why?

Today is Tuesday. It’s the busiest of the week for me because it’s the day when I have the most classes at school.

4. Is it Monday today? Do you feel happy or tired today? Did you meet any new friends today? Who was that?

No, I’m not. I’m a student/ an engineer.

Yes, I would. I think that teaching English is a great job because an English teacher can teach a lot of people to speak English well, which opens many job opportunities to them.

I think that the teaching job is a respectful and interesting job. A teach needs to constantly update his/her knowledge and can educate a lot of students, who will later contribute to the society.

It is a pretty well-paid job. Many schools pay really good rates in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
